What is your work like? What are your duties?

As a Mental Health Coordinator, I provide care and support to patients receiving in-patient psychiatric treatment at United Hospital. On a day to day basis, this involves collecting and documenting patient health data, co-facilitating therapeutic groups, supporting patients in regulating their emotions, performing unit safety checks, and collaborating with the multidisciplinary psychiatric team.

How would you say your psychology degree has helped you with your current job?

The knowledge I gained through my psychology degree has been fundamental to my work. Courses such as Abnormal Psychology and Biopsychology have provided me with the core understanding of mental health that I need to work with patients experiencing mental health crisis. Additionally, through the research experience I completed as a part of my degree, I gained exposure to the field of psychology that has been very valuable to my professional growth.

How did you find your current position? Please include any resources you may have used (UMN or otherwise)

I found my current position by researching organizations that align with my values, and going directly to their websites to look for job opportunities.

What advice do you have for our current psych students and recent grads?

My advice to current psych students and recent grads is to let your curiosity guide you: Talk to your professors about topics that interest you; get involved with research; ask professionals in your life about their experiences. Follow each spark of interest that blows your way, and eventually you'll find your passion.
